This Percussive Fret Hand Muted Power Chord exercise is designed to help you connect power chords with strummed muted strings. This technique gives you a very rhythmic and percussive sound. This technique is used everywhere, from punk rock, metal, funk guitar, blues, and reggae. It’s an essential tool for improving your guitar playing. The challenge with muted strings is getting strings to ring correctly when you want them, and muted when you don’t. Sometimes you will need to lay your fingers flat over the strings to eliminate any unwanted string noise.
Begin on a A5 power chord on the fifth fret on the sixth string. Play that chord twice, with two downward pick strokes. Next, mute all the strings and strum four eighth notes. Use a down, up, down, up pick pattern. measure two is the same pattern on an E5 power chord. On the last eighth note play an open E5 power chord right into the G5 on beat one of bar three. The fourth measure is played on a D5 power chord on the fifth fret of the sixth string. This four chord sequence is played twice before going onto the second half of this progression.
The harmonic rhythm is longer in the second part of this exercise. Begin on the E5 power chord on the seventh fret of the fifth string. Play all eight beats of this measure then mute the strings for the entire next measure. The same thing happens on G5 power chord, and on the D5, and C5 at the end of this section. When your ready, use the backing tracks to play the progression without guitar on the recording!
