When you want to learn any solo on your guitar Chris Zoupa is the guy you want to learn from, and now we have him doing a lesson for us at practicetheguitar.com, this dude is incredible!
This amazing 16 measure solo covers many awesome techniques that every guitarist would want to learn, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, many position shifts, arpeggios, lydian scale, minor pentatonic, chromatic lines, sweep picking, and even two finger tapping. We see all our favorite guitar players using all these techniques, and learning this soloing exercise will vastly improve your guitar playing regardless of your skill level. The tonality of this solo is D lydian, That is a A major scale with the chord progression set up where D major is the home chord. Instead of the tonic note of the A major scale being the A note, its the D. The A major scale is A B C# D E F# G# A. The D lydian scale is D E F# G# A B C# D. The shift in the order of the intervals coupled with the chords being used gives the unique sound of the dorian scale.
This solo begins with a clever legato phrase on the second and fourth frets with a slide up to the sixth fret. this gives a very smooth and clean phrase. The scalar run in bar three employs a nice mix of hame-ons and pull-offs for a cool spice to the line. Moving on to the next section we have a nice mix of chromatic passing tones, and well supported bending. many awesome lines in the section. Bars seven and eight steal some ideas from the B minor pentatonic scale, with the C natural in there for an interesting texture.
The big arpeggio section using not only some awesome string skipping, but also a mix of tapping in there as well, its four bars of some really great licks. The later sections use some great bending, and some wide spread sequences capping the solo off.
