Use alternate picking starting with a down-stroke.
This diagonal 1 2 3 4 finger exercise moves down and up the neck in a criss cross type pattern. Begin on the first fret, first string, first finger. Play the first four frets. Move to the second string on the second fret and repeat the pattern from there. This basic shape moves down each string as you move up one fret. When you arrive at the sixth fret on the sixth string, move to the seventh fret on the fifth string, continue with 1 2 3 4. Move up one fret as you move up one string at a time. When you get to the fourteenth fret on the first string switch to 4 3 2 1. The more difficult part of this exercise is descending back through the pattern, because your leading with the fourth finger. Play through the same pattern in reverse till you get back to the first fret with your first finger.
