Pro Tip:
Try to improvise with the backing track using small pieces of this exercise. Also, take extra care to make sure that the non picked notes are as close to the same volume as the picked notes.
The Legato Pentatonic Groupings of 5 exercise is a sequence that takes the pentatonic scale in groupings of five notes from every note in the scale. This type of scale sequence is used in thousands of guitar solos and is something that every guitar player should be comfortable with. You should be very comfortable with pattern one of the pentatonic scale to be successful with this exercise. Begin the pattern on the third fret on the sixth string. Play the first five notes of the scale. These 5 notes are G, Bb, C, D, F, go back to the sixth fret on the sixth string and play the next five notes of the scale from there. One way to help you keep track of the notes is to count one, two, three, four, five, every time you start a new set of notes. Doing this will quickly help you keep track of where you are in the sequence. Once you make it up to the third fret on the sixth string end the ascending part with a half note on the third fret on the first string. That’s the root of the scale. Next move through the sequence backwards through the scale. Start this on the sixth fret on the first string. Continue to count through each section one, two, three, four, five. The pattern ends on the third fret on the sixth string. The second half of this exercise is the same exact pattern an octave higher. This starts on the fifteenth fret on the sixth string. Notice that with this exercise any two notes that are on the same string are played with a hammer-on or a pull-off. Hammer-ons are used when ascending and pull-offs are used when descending.
