A Minor Diagonal Pentatonic
Pro Tips:
Pro Tip:
Don’t be afraid to start by playing only four notes at a time, adding more as you get comfortable.
Use alternate picking.
Focus on keeping the position shifts in time.
The A minor diagonal pentatonic exercise, you can improve your ability to navigate the fretboard through the minor pentatonic scale. There are a few different first finger position shifts that get your through the whole scale. not only can you work on your alternate picking, but you can also use hammer-ons and pull-offs to improve your legato playing as well.
Start this on the third and then fifth fret on the sixth string, and then the third fret and the fifth fret on the fifth string. Notice the position shifts every four frets, the pattern is sixth and fifth strings. Fifth and fourth strings, fourth and third strings, third and second strings, and second and first strings.
When you get you fifteenth fret on the first string, reverse the pattern heading back to the third fret on the sixth string. The next half of the exercise starts on the twelfth fret on the sixth string. This section moves in the same fashion, moving across the two string sets. I like to look at it as a reverse diagonal shape.
If you have a difficult time connecting the shapes, break up the four pieces of this exercise into smaller segments.
