String Skipping Major And Minor 7th Arpeggios
In this arpeggio exercise I want to cover share a trick based around a concept that will add some sophistication to your improvisations (while also being sure to turn heads with its attention-grabbing coolness!): open-voiced, string-skipping 7th arpeggios. The basic idea is this: we split up the arpeggios into six-note patterns with two notes per string on three strings, skipping a string in between each.
The first chord we re covering is a Gmaj7, 1, 3, 5, 7 (G, B, D, F#). The sequence begins on the fourteenth fret on the fifth string, pulling off to the tenth fret. Next, jump over to the eleventh fret on the third string. There is a ping pin type effect with this pattern because there are a lot of repeated notes. Check out the tablature and get the whole pattern. Just notice that whenever there is a skipped string, I’m hybrid picking that skipped string with the second finger of the picking hand.
Once you get the basic pattern of the sequence, this pattern is going to next move to an Am7 arpeggio starting on the fifteenth fret. The pattern slightly changes because of the difference in intervals. The formula for this chord is 1, b3, 5, b7 (A, C, E, G). For the third chord we are moving to an Em7 in the seventh postition. (E, G, B, D). The fourth chord is a Cmaj7 in the third position.
The second time through we switch up the chords, covering Gmaj7 again, then a Em7 for the second chord. For the third chord we are doing a F#m7b5. 1, b3, b5, b7. (F#, A, C, E) The last chord is a D7 in the fifth position. 1, 3, 5, b7 (D, F#, A, C)
